Walk the Talk: Conquering Pride One Week at a Time

I chose to work on conquering my pride for this final capstone project.  The plan was simple!  Every Sunday I read Beware of Pride by President Ezra Taft Benson. Each week as I read the talk, a different section was brought to my attention by the Holy Ghost.  I would record that specific part on a white board in the hallway so I would see it several times a day.  I would pray and study and try hard to implement the section I was working on to my daily life.  This is hard to explain so I'll share an example.

President Benson says,

"We can choose to humble ourselves by conquering enmity toward our brothers and sisters, esteeming them as ourselves, and lifting them as high or higher than we are.”

This was the first section that stood out to me.  I realized that I had a hard time lifting others higher because I imagined to lift them higher would mean to push myself down lower.

That entire week I practiced lifting others up as high, or higher than myself and an amazing thing happened.  I never once felt pushed down.  I felt joy in giving praise and expecting nothing in return.  Several people expressed gratitude and we were all lifted up.  Because I continually practice this, I have not fallen into jealousy again.

Every week, Heavenly Father has given me a new piece of the talk to work on in myself.  I will not stop reading the talk because the practicum is over, because this is something I need to work on until I can learn to be humble.

The Lord will have a humble people.  We can choose humility, or be given trials to humble us.  Let us choose to be humble on our own.
